Update on Programs

As CHI is completing a one year mark on the programs that were launched in 2015, we are excited to see the impact these programs are making in the communities where they were launched. In some of them proposals for expansion are already under consideration.

First CHI Fully Accredited School in Hyderabad

CHI Hyderabad SchoolThis school faced imminent closure a year ago when CHI stepped in and enabled the school to continue educating the children from the nearby slum communities. Efforts are being made to increase enrollment and open grades 1 to 4 that were shut down due to lack of funds. Additional services such as medical care, mid day meal and vocational training are being added. This partnership has boosted the morale of the staff and students. The school now boasts of over 90% children pursuing higher education.

Mobile School in Delhi

Childrens Hope India Mobile SchoolA mobile school bus travels daily to North East Delhi making stops in Shastri Park, Mansarover Park, and Usmanapur. This is the only school that children from these marginalized communities attend. On an average 170 children attend the ‘classes’ that are conducted in the bus which is fitted with benches and screen for AV presentation.

Classes are also held in a suitable nearby location if the class size is large. The aim is to teach basic math and science, and link the students to nearby schools for formal learning.

Educate a Child in Bhopal

CHI Educate a Child in Bhopal200 children from the slum community of Gandhi Nagar received the gift of education in Bhopal.   This program not only includes tuition but books, uniforms, supplies, tutoring and a healthy mid-day snack for these children.   The nutritional program was expanded to include all children in this school up to fifth grade.

CHI Hole in the Wall Centers in DelhiIn the densely populated slum communities of Madangir and Vikaspuri CHI has installed the Hole in the Wall centers.  These are learning stations, strategically installed in playgrounds, that bring innovative technology to educate children in these communities.

They are open to all the children and attract over 500 children a month.

Jagati School in Jammu

CHI Jagati Jammu SchoolOver 5,000 families live in refugee camps in Jagati. These families left Kashmir to escape ethnic violence. CHI along with Sharika Trust has entered a partnership with the local government to revamp a primary school that is in shambles and hence enrollment and attendance has plummeted. Reconstruction in the school will restore the building, electricity, plumbing as well as add additional facilities such as playgrounds, computer room and library. Needed services include teacher training, additional staff, a computer center, and library. Plans to add a nursery school are also under consideration.

Project Khilo in Mumbai

CHI Project KhiloCHI will be sponsoring ten girls at Prem Dan – a Kindergarten center that prepares underprivileged children to join English medium schools for a good education.

These girls will be tracked closely, from kindergarten to grade 10, and support will be provided to ensure that they are empowered to succeed
